Reminders 1.11.23
Dear Secondary Parents,
First, let me say how much fun we are having during Winterim with your students! It’s such a great time for learning new things, having minimal homework, and enjoying time together.
The relaxed nature of Winterim can become too relaxed, so please remind your students about the following:
- Full uniforms should be worn daily. During the winter months if students are cold the only options are sweater vests and cardigans, but they can wear both!
- Jackets, sweatshirts, and coats are fine during lunch, but those items should stay in lockers while students are inside and in class.
- Changing in/out of uniform
- Students participating in Winter Adventure can arrive in appropriate clothing and change into uniform after class.
- Students participating in Futsal should bring a PE uniform and change before and after class.
- Students participating in Rugby and Dance should change before class, but they don’t have to change back into uniform before they go home.
- Gum chewing – no gum please! Students found chewing gum at any time will be asked to help clean up gum around the school.
Thanks for all your support!

January Builders Theme: I am a builder when I work diligently
One of the biggest deterrents to working diligently is wasting time. When we look back on our day and how time passed –often we realize what could’ve been accomplished with that time. There are many ways to waste time, but one of the most common is by allowing ourselves to get distracted or discouraged about our tasks and assignments. When the urge to roam hits, take a deep breath and be still while you refocus yourself by remembering your objective.
Parent Empowerment Meeting – January 9
Our next parent empowerment meeting will be about child safety and human trafficking. This will be a virtual meeting at 7 PM on January 9th. You can join this meeting by using the following zoom link:
https://uetn-org.zoom.us/j/84062701727. Reminder – Secondary students can remediate tardies by joining the meeting with their parents. One tardy per student/parent who attends.
Secondary Band Camp – January 13, 10 AM – 1 PM
All 7-9th grade band students should plan to attend. If you can only be there part of the time, that’s more preferable than you not being there at all. Lunch will be served (pizza and pop). Please confirm with Ms. Shearer at sshearer@apamail.org.
Celebration of Excellence Re-enrollment Meetings- January 16 and 17
Returning families, these are the required steps for re-enrollment for next school year.
- Attend Celebration of Excellence Meeting. These will take place on January 16th at 7 PM or January 17th at 8:30 AM.
- Your student must meet all promotion benchmarks.
- Fill out re-enrollment via Skyward. This will only be opened after you attend a celebration of excellence meeting and any meetings regarding promotion.

Winterim Assistance
We have several classes that would benefit from parent volunteers during Winterim. Please contact the teachers listed if you are available.
Winter Adventure (going outside regularly) – Period 1 from 8:00 AM – 9:47 AM whillyard@apamail.org
Cooking – Periods 1 & 2 from 8:00 AM – 11:18 AM thicks@apamail.org
We also have several field trips that we would love to have parents help supervise:
Hill Air Force Base – Wednesday, January 10 8:00 AM – 1:30 PM nabraham@apamail.org
Cooking – Friday, January 12 8:00 AM – 11:18 AM thicks@apamail.org
Service – Wednesday, January 17 8:00 AM – 1:30 PM whillyard@apamail.org
Mrs. Hillyard is looking for plastic grocery bags and clean, empty water bottles for a couple of service projects for her winterim classes. If you have some that you’d be willing to share, you can have your students drop them off at the front offices, and she will collect them.
Names on Personal Items
Please make sure that your students’ names are on all personal items they bring from home. Winter coats, water bottles, sweaters (students take them off frequently at recess and forget them), lunchboxes, and backpacks should all have a name written on the inside tag. Every break, we clean out the lost and found and donate all unclaimed items to a charity.
Road Construction Update
When school resumes on January 3rd, a portion of Elk Ridge Drive will be under construction – this is shown by a dotted black line on the map. APA will still be accessible from both entrances (in front of the school, and from the staff parking lot). If you typically come from the north on Elk Ridge Drive, you will need to use an alternate route. Suggestions are shown in yellow.

December Builders Theme: I am a builder when I look for ways to serve others (Kigatsuku)
Thank you to all our students for participating in December’s theme by watching for the needs of others! We hope you have been experiencing some of this in your homes. A wonderful trait is to see things that need to be done without being told or asked – and we have made progress in this value this month! We are creating a wonderful community together as we unite in looking for ways to help.
Holiday Shirt/Sweater Day – December 19
We are so excited that we reached our goal of collecting 2,100 items for our hygiene drive! Congratulations! We couldn’t have done it without each of you helping. Since we reached our goal as a school, everyone will have the opportunity to wear an ugly or holiday sweater or shirt, on Tuesday, December 19th. Students still need to be in uniform bottoms. Sweaters/shirts need to be school appropriate with no offensive or distracting logos. If you have any questions or concerns, you can reach out to Mrs. Hillyard at whillyard@apamail.org.

Salem Staffing Update
Dear Salem Parents,
We wanted to make you aware of some staffing changes at our campus. We are sad that Mrs. Sophie Mueras-Saavedra will not be returning after her maternity leave, and Ms. Clarissa Lunt will be moving north and will leave at the end of this term.
We are excited to announce that Mrs. Rebekah Vance will be our new Elementary Music teacher, as well as the Choir and Orchestra teacher. She has been so helpful to substitute for music, and we are happy to have her teaching with us full time.

School Safety Update 12.15.23
Dear Salem Parents,
Early this morning police departments in Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming received bomb threats for many schools. While most reports of this nature are simply threats or pranks, we always take them seriously and follow our emergency action plan. At 6:45 am, the police came to our school with bomb sniffing dogs to do precautionary sweeps and cleared the school. We are grateful to have such a great working relationship with the Salem police, who responded so quickly to ensure our students are safe. We are cleared to hold school today as normal.

There is something so deeply rewarding about this builders theme as we watch your children fall into the rhythm of kigatsuku. Imagine the energy and influence of an entire community of kigatsuku as we work toward something better than just ourselves. Imagine doing it without reward or compensation. Imagine what we could accomplish if we did the simplest thing- see a need, meet a need.

December Builders Theme: I am a builder when I look for ways to serve others (Kigatsuku)
Kigatsuku is a Japanese word meaning “an inner spirit to act without being told what to do,” or “see a need, meet a need.” It’s simple; we don’t need to go out of our way; we don’t need to schedule it; we don’t need to travel to other countries. We only need to look around us and see how we can help the person right in front of us.

Winter Weather Closure
American Prep strives to follow Nebo School District with regard to school closures due to inclement weather or emergencies. However, there are times that Nebo District closes and APA chooses a delayed start at 10:00 am. Parents should check our website (https://salem.americanprep.org/) and watch for emails/texts for school closure information. We send out emails and text messages as soon as a decision is made, between 6:00 – 7:00 am.
Parents are ultimately responsible for deciding if inclement weather is severe enough that they cannot drive to school.

Gathering Homework for Sick Students
As we are entering cold and flu season, please notify the front office if your student is ill. Typically, if a student is sick for 1-3 days, they return to school and get their missing work. Parents can request missing work be provided by the teacher, but teachers have 24 hours to gather homework for absent students. For elementary students we can sometimes help in gathering reading and math books without bothering teachers during teaching time. However, getting homeroom information and lesson numbers will take more time so we do not interrupt classes. We cannot guarantee we can gather everything the same day a student is out sick.
