Names on Personal Items
Please make sure that your students’ names are on all personal items they bring from home. Winter coats, water bottles, sweaters (students take them off frequently at recess and forget them), lunchboxes, and backpacks should all have a name written on the inside tag. Every break, we clean out the lost and found and donate all unclaimed items to a charity.
Saturday School (Secondary) January 27th
There are enough students with excessive tardies that we will begin hosting Saturday school on January 27th. Mrs. Peery sent an email to parents to notify them if their student needs to attend.
Tardies – from Salem Parent/Student Handbook pg. 23-24
- Students who are not present and prepared at the beginning of class may be marked tardy for that class.
- Each class is evaluated independently.
- If a student accumulates a total of four or more tardies in any class, the grade for the class will be changed to NC (no credit) and will remain as NC until the student fulfills the requirements to remove the NC.
- The No Credit (NC) will remain as the letter grade for that class unless the student fulfills the requirements of attendance school (see Attendance School policy), or completes assigned academic work to make up for the lost academic time.
Attendance School – from Salem Parent/Student Handbook pg. 23-24
- Attendance school is a service provided to assist students in clearing their attendance record from excessive tardies. When a student is tardy more than four times to a class, their grade is changed to NC (no credit).
- Students may clear their attendance record from the NC by attending attendance school.

Secondary Update 1.20.24
End of Winterim
We had such a wonderful conclusion to our Winterim session – we all gathered for an assembly where students received numerous awards: Builder of the Month, High Honor Roll, Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, Science Fair, Pipette Olympics (DNA class), Chess tournament winners, Build a World winners, Typing Contest winners (8th grade digital literacy), Catan tournament winners, Futsal tournament winners, etc. It was so much fun! All the winners will be included in the newsletter on Monday.
Staffing Updates
We wanted to make you aware of several staffing updates: Mrs. Hall had her last day on Friday. We are so sad to have her leave, but so happy for her to prepare for the arrival of her little one. Mrs. Hatch will be moving to the secondary office, so you can reach out to her as we go forward. Mrs. Barino welcomed their second daughter, and she will be on maternity leave for about a month. Mrs. Kim Baschke will substitute for her, covering her math and leadership classes.
Schedule Changes
We have made changes to the student schedule, and all students will be provided with paper copies on Monday. We were able to split some classes so they are smaller, and even out some class sizes. We are happy to be able to make these changes – they will really benefit our students.
With a few exceptions, your students will be in the same classes they had before, but they may have a different order of classes compared to last term. You can find the updated schedule in Skyward. Any students with class changes will receive an additional email.

Staffing Change
Mrs. Hall, who is expecting her second baby soon. Her last day will be this Friday, January 19th. Starting Monday, January 22nd, Mrs. Hatch will be in the secondary office, and Mrs. Jones will be in the elementary office.
Watch for an email before Friday with your student’s status.

Reminders 1.11.23
Dear Secondary Parents,
First, let me say how much fun we are having during Winterim with your students! It’s such a great time for learning new things, having minimal homework, and enjoying time together.
The relaxed nature of Winterim can become too relaxed, so please remind your students about the following:
- Full uniforms should be worn daily. During the winter months if students are cold the only options are sweater vests and cardigans, but they can wear both!
- Jackets, sweatshirts, and coats are fine during lunch, but those items should stay in lockers while students are inside and in class.
- Changing in/out of uniform
- Students participating in Winter Adventure can arrive in appropriate clothing and change into uniform after class.
- Students participating in Futsal should bring a PE uniform and change before and after class.
- Students participating in Rugby and Dance should change before class, but they don’t have to change back into uniform before they go home.
- Gum chewing – no gum please! Students found chewing gum at any time will be asked to help clean up gum around the school.
Thanks for all your support!

January Builders Theme: I am a builder when I work diligently
One of the biggest deterrents to working diligently is wasting time. When we look back on our day and how time passed –often we realize what could’ve been accomplished with that time. There are many ways to waste time, but one of the most common is by allowing ourselves to get distracted or discouraged about our tasks and assignments. When the urge to roam hits, take a deep breath and be still while you refocus yourself by remembering your objective.
Parent Empowerment Meeting – January 9
Our next parent empowerment meeting will be about child safety and human trafficking. This will be a virtual meeting at 7 PM on January 9th. You can join this meeting by using the following zoom link:
https://uetn-org.zoom.us/j/84062701727. Reminder – Secondary students can remediate tardies by joining the meeting with their parents. One tardy per student/parent who attends.
Secondary Band Camp – January 13, 10 AM – 1 PM
All 7-9th grade band students should plan to attend. If you can only be there part of the time, that’s more preferable than you not being there at all. Lunch will be served (pizza and pop). Please confirm with Ms. Shearer at sshearer@apamail.org.

Winterim Assistance
We have several classes that would benefit from parent volunteers during Winterim. Please contact the teachers listed if you are available.
Winter Adventure (going outside regularly) – Period 1 from 8:00 AM – 9:47 AM whillyard@apamail.org
Cooking – Periods 1 & 2 from 8:00 AM – 11:18 AM thicks@apamail.org
We also have several field trips that we would love to have parents help supervise:
Hill Air Force Base – Wednesday, January 10 8:00 AM – 1:30 PM nabraham@apamail.org
Cooking – Friday, January 12 8:00 AM – 11:18 AM thicks@apamail.org
Service – Wednesday, January 17 8:00 AM – 1:30 PM whillyard@apamail.org
Mrs. Hillyard is looking for plastic grocery bags and clean, empty water bottles for a couple of service projects for her winterim classes. If you have some that you’d be willing to share, you can have your students drop them off at the front offices, and she will collect them.

Road Construction Update
When school resumes on January 3rd, a portion of Elk Ridge Drive will be under construction – this is shown by a dotted black line on the map. APA will still be accessible from both entrances (in front of the school, and from the staff parking lot). If you typically come from the north on Elk Ridge Drive, you will need to use an alternate route. Suggestions are shown in yellow.
