Back to School Night – August 14 5-7pm
All students are invited to come to the school and meet their teachers! Classroom assignments will be posted on this day. Look for information about volunteering, after school clubs, and ordering school lunches. Secondary students will receive their locker assignments and schedules.
This is a great chance to get involved – volunteer to help in the classroom, with FSO, or during Ambassador events!
Elementary Teacher Assignments
Teacher assignments will be posted at the teacher meet and greet on August 14 from 5-7pm. If you can’t make it to the meet and greet, watch for an email from Mrs. Barton by Monday August 17th. There will be no other time for your students to meet their teachers before the first day of school, our staff are not working on Aug 17th and 18th, they are enjoying their last moments of summer vacation.
7th Grade Orientation – August 14, 4pm, 7pm
All incoming 7th graders (and their parents) are invited to attend 7th grade orientation. We will tell you everything you need to know about transitioning to junior high! The first presentation will be at 4pm, and the same presentation will be given at 7pm for those who were not able to attend early.
Enrollment Changes
If your plans to return to APA Salem change, please let our registrar know as soon as possible – Mrs. Turco cturco@apamail.org. Most of our grades have waiting lists, and it gives these waiting families time to make their plans for next year.
First Day of School – August 19
The doors to the building will be unlocked at 7:30 am and school begins promptly at 8:00 am. The parking lot is reserved for kindergarten students and their families. All other families should go through the carpool line and drop students off on the curb. Parents should stay in their cars and allow our staff to assist your students. This keeps the line moving, and makes the first day flow as smoothly as possible. Please take pictures and give goodbye hugs and kisses BEFORE getting in the car.
Kindergarten – First Day Drop Off
- Option 1 – You are welcome to follow the normal drop off procedures and leave your kindergarten student at the curb – there will be staff members to help them. Let the staff member know that they are in kindergarten and they will be escorted directly to the kindergarten classroom.
- Option 2 – After 7:50 am (when buses are done unloading and staff are done parking), you may park in the front or gravel parking lot and walk your student to class.
- Option 3 – If you do not have other elementary or secondary students, we recommend you arrive at 8:05 am, park in the front, and escort them to class.
After the first day, please drop your student off at the back of the school for morning carpool. We’ll have staff ready to walk students to the gym and help them find their way. The kindergarten team will practice this routine with the students on day one.
Kindergarten Pick Up – August 19, 20, 21
All kindergarten students will be picked up at 11:00 am for the first three days. This allows us to conduct state reading/math testing and group placement assessments in the afternoons. If you have other elementary or secondary students, you will return to pick them up at the regular time. Please sign up for a time for your kindergartener to come and be assessed here.
Parent Orientation – August 25 6-8pm
This is for parents only and is a chance for you as parents to make a connection and get to know your teacher and how everything works. Elementary will run on 20 minute rotations with the first one starting at 6. You’ll want to come with enough time to attend one rotation per elementary student that you have. Secondary does faster rotations of about 10 minutes and you’ll need about an hour to visit all the teachers for your student.
Drop Off and Pick Up
We will be using two curbs this year – Yellow (back) and Blue (gravel parking lot). You will see your carpool assignment during the meet and greet.
LDS Early Morning Seminary Pick Up
9th graders who wish to enroll in LDS seminary can go to mySeminary.churchofjesuschrist.org
- Log in. Click on the student’s name.
- Click Register over at the right.
- Choose the location: Salem Senior High School
- After you finish registering, email Emily Johns, the seminary Administrative Assistant, at Jhbrandley@churchofjesuschrist.org to let her know that the student will be attending the early morning class.

What Your Grader Needs to Know Books
We do our book exchange for “What your Grader Needs to Know” books at the beginning of the year. You can bring these to the meet and greet and give them to your homeroom teacher. They will be exchanged within the first couple of weeks of school as long as supplies allow.

Amber Nunley – 4th grade instructor
Hello, I am Amber Nunley. I am so excited to be instructing in 4th grade for my first year. I am a mom to 4 kiddos. We recently moved to the Payson area, and we are loving it. My favorite book series are Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and The Inheritance games. I love being outside in my garden.
Paula Nelson – Teacher in Training
I am from Idaho and grew up being very active. If I wasn’t on the lake boating, I was playing sports, or working. I earned my Bachelor’s in Health Science but I have since leaned heavily into the education realm. This is my first year as an elementary teacher in training but I have spent many years as a substitute, paraprofessional, and most recently a reading technician. I coach girls high school basketball at SHHS and it’s a huge passion of mine. However, my biggest passion is spending my time with my wonderful husband and 4 fantastic children. I am excited to be a part of the APA family and look forward to contributing to their mission of changing lives.
Kristin Gallegos – Elementary Secretary
My name is Kristin Gallegos, and I’m excited to be the new elementary secretary this year. My kids have attended APA Salem for the last 13 years, and we love it here. I enjoy being outdoors–especially when it involves seeing new things and exploring new places, and making memories with my family. I look forward to getting to know you and helping you at the front desk.
Gus Wilson – Operations Director
Howdy. My name is Gus Wilson, I am taking over as the Operations Director for Butch Wilson. Yep, we are related, he is my Dad. I have worked as an Electrician for 4 years, and as a Maintenance Technician for 16 years at Flowserve in Springville UT. During my time off I enjoy the outdoors. Fishing, Hunting, hiking and camping are my favorite ways to unwind. I enjoy reading books, especially westerns (Louis Lamour is one of the best.) I look forward to working with everyone in the coming years.
Alissa Shelley – 5th Grade Teacher
Hi my name is Alissa Shelley. I am so excited to be teaching 5th grade this year! I was born and raised in Salem. This will be my second year teaching. Last year I was an intern teacher in 4th grade and received my bachelors degree in elementary education. Before that I worked at a Title 1 school as a math aide for three and a half years. I love teaching and working with kids. I’m excited to share my passion for writing and history with my students. A fun fact about me is that I love to cook and bake. My favorite thing to make right now is cinnamon rolls or homemade pasta.
Jace Andersen – 6th Grade Teacher
Hi! My name is Jace Andersen, and I am excited to be joining APA Salem as a 6th grade teacher! I graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in History and am currently pursuing a master’s degree in History through the University of Edinburgh. Before becoming a teacher, I spent several years creating and delivering training and eventually managed a training team. Teaching has been a goal of mine for a long time, so I’m excited to finally be in the classroom. Outside of school, I love spending time with my wife and our two young boys, traveling whenever I get the chance, and experiencing new places and cultures. I’man unapologetic history nerd, especially when it comes to medieval history, and I’m equally obsessed with rugby. I’m looking forward to getting to know my students and having a great year at APA Salem!
Baylee Heap – Lower Grade Instructor
Hello! My name is Baylee Heap, and I am very excited to be back at APA and working with the 1st graders this year! I’m currently attending UVU to earn my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and have always loved working with children. Hobby-wise, I usually tell people that I like a little bit of everything! I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie and love going on wild adventures. One of those adventures resulted in me breaking my hand and losing the ability to bend my pinky. (I have the incident on video, and it is amazing!) I’m looking forward to another great year and getting to know all of the students!
Holly Strong – 3rd Grade Teacher
Hi! My name is Holly Strong, and I am so excited to be teaching 3rd grade at the Salem Campus this year! This is my 17th year teaching elementary school and my 10th year teaching 3rd grade at American Preparatory Academy. I graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Elementary Education and truly love helping students learn, grow, and discover just how much they are capable of.
Outside of the classroom, I am a mom of five and a proud grandma of four wonderful grandchildren. Family is very important to me, and I love spending time with them whenever I can. During the summer, one of my favorite things to do is escape to the mountains for some camping and fresh air.
I am looking forward to a wonderful year at Salem and am excited to get to know your children!
Allyson Price – Elementary Instructor
I am originally from Idaho and received my Bachelor’s Degree from BYU-Idaho. My family moved to Utah about four years ago, and we have absolutely loved it. I have three kiddos currently at APA, and we hope everyone will be able to graduate from here. This is my first year working for APA, and I’m so excited to be a part of the team!
I love music and play the flute, piano, and organ (yes, piano and organ are very different!). I love all crafts, but I mostly spend my time knitting. My goal is to knit a sweater for my whole family by the end of the year. Outside of knitting, I recently started reading a lot. I have a goal to read 45 books this year, and I’m already over 30!

Noche de bienvenida al inicio del curso escolar – 14 de agosto, de 17:00 a 19:00.

Asignaciones de maestros de primaria
Las asignaciones de maestros se publicarán en la reunión de bienvenida el 14 de agosto de 5 a 7 p. m. Si no puede asistir, esté atento a un correo electrónico de la Sra. Orientación para alumnos de 7.º grado – 14 de agosto, 16:00 y 19:00

Primer día de clases – 19 de agosto
Las puertas del edificio se abrirán a las 7:30 a. m. y las clases comenzarán puntualmente a las 8:00 a. m. El estacionamiento está reservado para los alumnos de kínder y sus familias. Las demás familias deben usar la fila de recogida y dejar a sus hijos en la acera. Los padres deben permanecer en sus autos y permitir que nuestro personal ayude a sus hijos. Esto agiliza la fila y facilita el inicio del curso. Por favor, tomen fotos y despídanse con abrazos y besos ANTES de subir al auto.
Jardín de infancia – Entrega el primer día
- Opción 1: Puede seguir el procedimiento habitual de entrada y dejar a su hijo/a de kínder en la acera; habrá personal para ayudarle. Indíquele al miembro del personal que su hijo/a está en kínder y lo acompañarán directamente al aula.
- Opción 2: Después de las 7:50 a. m. (cuando los autobuses hayan terminado de descargar y el personal haya terminado de estacionar), puede estacionar en el estacionamiento delantero o en el estacionamiento de grava y acompañar a su estudiante a clase.
- Opción 3: Si no tiene otros alumnos de primaria o secundaria, le recomendamos que llegue a las 8:05 de la mañana, aparque delante y los acompañe a clase.
Después del primer día, por favor, deje a su hijo/a en la parte trasera de la escuela para el transporte escolar matutino. Contaremos con personal para acompañar a los estudiantes al gimnasio y ayudarlos a orientarse. El equipo de kínder practicará esta rutina con los estudiantes el primer día.
Recogida de niños en el jardín de infancia: 19, 20 y 21 de agosto.
Todos los alumnos de kínder serán recogidos a las 11:00 a. m. durante los primeros tres días. Esto nos permite realizar las pruebas estatales de lectura y matemáticas, así como las evaluaciones de ubicación grupal por las tardes. Si tiene otros alumnos de primaria o secundaria, deberá regresar a recogerlos a la hora habitual. Reunión informativa para padres – 25 de agosto, de 18:00 a 20:00
Esto es para solo para padres Es una oportunidad para que ustedes, como padres, establezcan una conexión y conozcan a su maestro y cómo funciona todo. En primaria, las sesiones serán de 20 minutos, comenzando la primera a las 6. Les recomendamos llegar con tiempo suficiente para asistir a una sesión por cada estudiante de primaria. En secundaria, las sesiones serán más rápidas, de unos 10 minutos, y necesitarán aproximadamente una hora para visitar a todos los maestros de su hijo.
Entrega y recogida
Este año utilizaremos dos bordillos: el amarillo (parte trasera) y el azul (estacionamiento de grava). Podrán ver la asignación de su vehículo compartido durante el encuentro.

Jace Andersen – Profesor de sexto grado
¡Hola! Mi nombre es Jace Andersen, ¡y estoy encantado de unirme a APA Salem como profesor de sexto grado! Me gradué de la Universidad Brigham Young con una licenciatura en Historia y soy Actualmente cursando una maestría en Historia en la Universidad de Edimburgo. Al convertirme en profesor, pasé varios años creando e impartiendo formación y finalmente Dirigí un equipo de capacitación. Holly Strong – Maestra de tercer grado
¡Hola! Me llamo Holly Strong y estoy encantada de impartir clases de tercer grado en el campus de Salem este año. Este es mi decimoséptimo año como maestra de primaria y mi décimo año enseñando tercer grado en la American Preparatory Academy. Me gradué de la Universidad Brigham Young con una licenciatura en Educación Primaria y me apasiona ayudar a los estudiantes a aprender, crecer y descubrir todo su potencial.
