October Builders Theme: I am a builder when I am perfectly honest.
As part of our virtuous Character Development component in our Mission Statement, our students are instructed that ‘perfect’ means ‘precisely accurate, exact,’ and ‘perfectly’ is ‘in a manner or way that could not be better.’ To be honest means ‘to be free of deceit and untruthfulness; sincere.’ We are encouraging our students to recognize that we should be perfectly honest in the “big” things as well as the “small.” Ask your child what that means to them. You may be surprised at their answers.
Parent Empowerment Meeting – October 10
What if you knew how to prevent death for your child? What would that be worth to you? Suicide is the #1 killer for our kids 10-24. Adults are also plagued by suicide with middle-aged men having the highest rate. However, there is something we can do, and it’s proven effective. Join us on Tuesday, October 10th at 7 pm for a Virtual Parent Empowerment Workshop on Suicide Prevention. We will learn to recognize the signs of suicide, learn how to ask someone about suicide, and how to help get them to help. We will also look at ways to improve mental health and prevent suicide ideation and attempts. Everyone really can make a difference! Feel free to invite family and friends over and participate together. Secondary students can have a tardy excused for every member of the family that participates in the meeting, up to three tardies. You can join this meeting by using the following zoom link: https://uetn-org.zoom.us/j/84548403459

Our school is focusing on being perfectly honest this month. A needed value in this life is honesty and the consequent trust that comes from it. We use the phrase “perfectly honest” because in our world, there is often a message sent that there is such a thing as “pretty honest” or “honest enough.” We encourage you to discuss this at home to help your students understand the difference.

Free Webinar with Love and Logic
Technology can be a wonderful tool for communication, learning, and healthy enjoyment. However it can also become a dark and destructive influence in the absence of necessary parental supervision and limits. Do you ever feel like your child’s cell phone, game console, or computer is like a monster that has taken over your home? Here are some signs that technology use might be a problem for your kids:
- Do your kids become defiant and refuse to take a break from their phone or computer?
- Even if they are willing to take a break, do they become exceptionally irritable, depressed, or bored during that time?
- Do they lie to you about their technology use and sneak time during their break?
- Any of these classic withdrawal symptoms are possible signs that your loved one has a problem that can lead to serious consequences if left untreated.
Join Dr. Daniel Amen of Amen Clinics and Dr. Charles Fay of Love and Logic on October 5th as they team up to help us understand more of the effect that technology has on our children and how to set healthy boundaries and rules with them. It is an online presentation and isn’t to be missed! Click here to sign up: https://courses.loveandlogic.com/registration-technology-misuse-addiction
9.29.23 Changes to Science – Salem Campus
Dear Secondary Parents,
We are both sad and excited to announce a change in science. After many years of amazing teaching, Mr. Wright is pursuing an employment opportunity outside of education. We are so grateful for his devoted service, and our students have been blessed by his teaching and his example. We know our students, parents, and staff will miss him! Mr. Wright will always be part of our APA Salem community, and we hope to see him during carpool and attending school events as a parent.
We are excited to introduce our new science teacher, Ms. Desiree Gates. Ms. Gates graduated from UVU with a degree in Biotechnology, and has been working in the field as a microbiologist for the last 10 years. We are so lucky to have someone with a great depth of knowledge in her field join us as the new science teacher in Salem.
This presents us with an opportunity to offer a science class that is more aligned with what the local school districts teach. Starting Monday, we will be transitioning both 9th grade classes from physics or earth science to biology. The foundation they received thus far has supported their mastery of the scientific method and has prepared them for the end of year state tests, which includes content from all three subject areas. The 7th and 8th grade curriculum will stay the same.
Starting Monday October 2, Mr. Wright will transition each 9th grade class to the biology curriculum. Ms. Gates will join him on Monday October 9 and they will team teach until the end of the term. Mr. Wright will begin his new job at the term break. We wish him the best in his new job!
Mr. Wright is presenting this news to the students today during his classes. Please let us know if your student needs any support from us during this transition.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Peery – epeery@apamail.org
Mrs. Elmer – kelmer@apamail.org
9.26.23 Salem JH – Pictures and College Day
Dear Secondary Parents,
Reminder that tomorrow is picture day! 8th and 9th grade students will have pictures taken before they leave for the field trips. 7th grade students will have pictures taken before lunch.
7th Grade
Students will stay at school and participate in a college fair. We have four parents presenting their college experiences and how college impacts their current career. After that, three teachers will conduct “virtual” tours of local colleges. Finally, they will enjoy a fun outdoor activity.
8th Grade
After school pictures, students will go to Utah Valley University (UVU) for a tour. Students should BRING THEIR OWN LUNCH, water bottles will be provided. We would love two additional parent volunteers – call Mrs. Hillyard 801-465-4434 (extension 1111) or 435-754-5309 (call or text).
9th Grade
After school pictures, students will go to Brigham Young University (BYU) for a tour. Students will be served 2 pieces of pizza and water bottles will be provided. If your student has special dietary needs, please have them bring their own meal. We would love one additional parent volunteer who can drive independently and help pick up the pizza. Please call Mrs. Hillyard 801-465-4434 (extension 1111) or 435-754-5309 (call or text).
We look forward to an exciting day!

September Builders Theme: I am a builder when I build with enthusiasm.
One of Walter Chrysler’s mottos was: “The real secret to success is enthusiasm.” It’s important for our students to know the attitudes they display towards working hard are a choice. When students develop and display an “I can do hard things” attitude, they gain further confidence in their abilities.

School pictures will be taken on Wednesday, September 27th. Students will need to be in full uniform. As stated in the uniform guide, hair accessories should be black, navy, red, or white; and they must be solid in color or the school plaid. Also, large earrings are not appropriate.

School Parent and Family Engagement Policies
School Parent Involvement Policies vary slightly by campus and are located within the Parent-Student Handbooks https://www.americanprep.org/parent-student-handbooks/. These Handbooks are distributed annually to parents and are now accessible on the APA website under the Parent Library drop-down tab. West Valley Parent-Student Handbooks will be available in Spanish.
Mandated Assessments and Opt-Outs
American Preparatory recognizes that Standardized Testing is an essential tool for measuring student learning and teacher success. The data obtained from these assessments may be utilized by teachers and administrators to review student academic progress, plan instruction, and share with students and parents. Summative assessments allow for data to be used in public reporting about school quality. Parents may opt-out of most state standardized tests by submitting a Parental Exclusion form to the Academic Director. You can learn more about the state assessments administered at American Prep and find the testing schedules for your student’s campus by following this link: https://www.americanprep.org/state-assessments/.
