We hope you are having a wonderful summer, and that you and your students are looking forward to returning to school soon! You are receiving this email because your student(s) are registered for the bus or on the bus waiting list. We have some changes we need to make to the cost of participating in the bus program.
Background Information:
Most people don’t know that charter schools do not receive funding for transportation or busing. Public schools receive transportation funding because they are required to bus any students within their boundaries that are a certain distance from the school or without a safe walking route. This does not apply to charter schools, because we do not have geographical boundaries.
For many years we have been running the bus program at a deficit, but along with the cost we have received the benefits of increased enrollment and reduced traffic during carpool. We value these things and we care about our families who use the bus program.
This summer we have been evaluating the cost of our bus program and the fees we collect. Last year we collected about $17,000 in bus fees. That averages out to about $600 per bus per month. As you can imagine, that is not enough to cover the cost of fuel, drivers and to maintain/fix the buses. Because we don’t receive transportation funding, these costs are coming out of general funds, which would otherwise be spent in other areas.
Bottom Line:
After a financial analysis, it was clear that we need to increase the bus fees so that those using the program are covering more of the financial costs. As we have all experienced, costs have risen year after year, but we have not increased our rates in many years.
2024-25 Costs
- Single Rider – $153/year ($17/month)
- Family Riders – $243/year ($27/month)
2025-26 Costs
- Single Rider – $270/year ($30/month)
- Family Riders – $450/year ($50/month)
We recognize this is a significant increase, and we don’t want anyone to panic – it is important that the bus program continues to be available to those who need it. We have several ways to make this possible for our bus families.
- Paid in Full Discount – if you pay in full by the first day of school, you will get 10% off. Single Rider – $245, Family Riders – $405
- Monthly Payments – you can set up automated monthly payments on E-Funds, which must be paid in full by April 2026 (9 monthly payments).
- If the new financial cost makes it so your family can no longer use the bus program, and especially if it means your family would not attend our school, you can request a waiver to use last year’s rates. Please email Mrs. Short at eshort@apamail.org and explain your situation. She is empowered to grant an exception for this year.
Seminary Bus Pick Up
Beginning this year, we are also charging a $50 yearly cost for pickup from Salem Hills High School seminary. In the past we offered this for free, but that was offering some students a benefit based on their religion, which shows preference for one group and discriminates against others. We looked into how the other APA schools handle this, and learned they assess a $50 yearly fee and that resolves the problem. Again, if this fee presents a barrier, please email Mrs. Short eshort@apamail.org. This fee does not apply to students who already ride the bus.
We want to say again how much we value your family and your students that attend our school! We know it is hard, but we feel it is the financially responsible decision to increase our bus program rates. We appreciate your understanding. Mucha gente desconoce que las escuelas chárter no reciben fondos para el transporte ni el transporte en autobús. Las escuelas públicas reciben fondos para el transporte porque están obligadas a transportar en autobús a cualquier estudiante dentro de sus límites que se encuentre a cierta distancia de la escuela o que no tenga una ruta segura para caminar. Esto no aplica a las escuelas chárter, ya que no tenemos límites geográficos.
Durante muchos años, hemos operado el programa de autobuses con déficit, pero junto con el costo, hemos recibido los beneficios de un aumento de la matrícula y la reducción del tráfico durante el programa de viajes compartidos. Valoramos estos aspectos y nos preocupamos por las familias que utilizan el programa de autobuses.
Este verano hemos estado evaluando el costo de nuestro programa de autobuses y las tarifas que cobramos. El año pasado recaudamos aproximadamente $17,000 en tarifas de autobús. Eso equivale en promedio a unos $600 por autobús al mes. Como se puede imaginar, eso no es suficiente para cubrir los gastos de combustible, conductores y mantenimiento/reparación de los autobuses. En resumen:
Tras un análisis financiero, quedó claro que necesitamos aumentar las tarifas de los autobuses para que quienes utilizan el programa cubran una mayor parte de los costos financieros. Como todos hemos experimentado, los costos han aumentado año tras año, pero no hemos aumentado nuestras tarifas en muchos años.
