Dear Salem Parents,
The 2024 partial solar eclipse will be happening tomorrow between 11:25 am and 1:40 pm. The sun will be 50% covered by the moon, which probably won’t be obvious unless students are looking at the sun through eclipse glasses. However, there is a risk that students without glasses will look at the sun and damage their eyes.
All secondary students have lunch at 11:25 am, and we want to allow them to be outside. If you want your students to go outside tomorrow during lunch, please discuss with your student the risks of looking at the sun without glasses, and complete an online waiver (link below). Only students with a completed waiver will be allowed outside during lunchtime.
We would like to have additional supervision outside, so we invite parents to come help during lunch time – if you are available, please come at 11:15 am.
We would love to facilitate students viewing the eclipse safely during the maximum at 12:30 pm. Unfortunately we did not purchase eclipse glasses. If you have eclipse glasses that you would be willing to lend, please label them with a permanent marker and have your student take them to the secondary office. If we get enough glasses, we will take the students out in groups between 12:15 – 12:45 pm. Otherwise, students will have class as usual. To participate, parents must complete the online waiver.
